The Art of Spanjer Guarantee

Creations by Art of Spanjer are authentic, original works, handmade by the artist, Tim Spanjer - a Pursell Farms Family Member Artist. From concept to construction, my ‘canvas’ and woodcut paintings are entirely fabricated by me in my studio and are light-weight and solidly constructed. Imperfections, painter marks, and construction-related nuances clearly showcase the marks of my artistic process and uphold the signature look and compelling attributes of my unique art. No two pieces are exactly alike as I avoid the mechanical perfection of mass-production. Pre-fabricated wood canvases or art substrates from an art store or from an art materials provider are never incorporated into my work. All of the materials used in my art have been purchased from home improvement stores.

My guarantee to you is that Art of Spanjer is hand-crafted and painted by me. Each piece bears the distinctive marks from the one-of-a-kind construction that it took to tell its story. I hope that you will appreciate this art.

To understand the quality of my art it is important to understand how I build and prepare my painting surfaces before I begin to paint.

‘Canvas’ Paintings

The wood used to produce these pieces is comprised of .125” to .1875” plywood under-laminate, supported by 1” x 2” primed pine, finger-joint board for framing. The wood is double buffed for a smooth finish and texture. Solid pine construction lends strength, durability, and performance. The corners of the ‘canvas’ are joined at 45 degree angles, then the plywood surface is glued with Titebond® III Ultimate Wood Glue. A continuous bead of glue is applied to all contact points to ensure fixed adhesion. After the plywood is connected to the framing and glued, it is brad-nailed to the framing all the way around. The canvas is left to dry overnight, then the nail holes are wood-filled, and the surface is double primed and sanded before being used for final art.

Woodcut Paintings

The wood used to produce these pieces is sized between 1” x 11.5” and 1” x 4”. Boards are biscuit-joined and glued using Titebond® III Ultimate Wood Glue and left to dry overnight in a wood press. The rear side of the final woodcut is thoroughly braced using 1” x 2” primed pine finger-joint board, glued and screwed to the back of the art. This ensures the joined boards stay bound together, and gives the art dimensional-lift of about 1.5” from the wall which adds to its aesthetic presentation and display.

Medium of Choice

The paint I use varies but 90% is Rust-Oleum® Painter’s Touch Ultra Cover Gloss General Purpose Paint. The other paints come from the high-gloss BEHR® and Sherwin Williams® line of paint products.
